The wait for a first medal of the Olympic Games goes on after a fruitless first day in Rio.

Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas, James Guy and Hannah Miley all narrowly missed out on a place on the podium as the Games opened in a flurry of drama in and out of the sporting arena.

Froome faltered in the men's road race before Thomas crashed out as Belgium's Greg Van Avermaet took gold.

And in the pool first Guy and then Miley narrowly missed out on medals themselves.

But all is not lost - no medals were won on the first day in 2008 or 2012 either!

And what's more, there are some real big hitters entering the fray on Sunday.

Here's what to look forward to today:

Today's schedule

Sunday's action begins with Helen Glover and Heather Stanning in the women's pair at Lagoa as they begin their bid to defend their gold medal from London four years ago.

At 2pm fencer James-Andrew Davis takes on Tunisia's Mohamed Ayoub Ferjani in the men's foil.

Teammate Laurence Halsted follows him at 3pm against Haiwei Chen of China with Richard Kruse also in action against Hamid Sintes.

Liam Pitchford continues his table tennis campaign against Zokhid Kenjaev of Uzbekistan with judoka Colin Oates taking on Kilian Le Blouch in the last 32 of the -66kg weight category shortly after.

In the rugby sevens Team GB's women take on Canada in their third match of Pool C after opening up with back-to-back wins yesterday while in the boxing arena Joshua Buatsi begins his quest for a medal in the light heavyweight division.

Lizzie Armitstead , a controversial figure in the build-up to the Games, looks to go one better than her silver four years ago when she lines up in the women's road race.

She'll get underway in Copacabana alongside teammates Emma Pooley and Nikki Harris around 4pm our time.

Wimbledon hero and flag-bearer extraordinaire Andy Murray starts his own journey towards what he will hope will be the defence of his 2012 gold.

The British number one is third on centre court where he will face fiery Serbian Victor Troicki in what should be an entertaining affair.

Andy will then join brother Jamie later on in the doubles against the host pair of Thomaz Bellucci and Andre Sa.

Heather Watson started her own singles campaign with a win yesterday and doubles partner Jo Konta gets her chance - she faces Stephanie Vogt of Liechtenstein.

In the hockey GB's men get underway against New Zealand - they push back at 10pm our time.

In the early evening action in the pool Georgia Davies, Molly Renshaw, Jazmin Carlin, Cameron Kurle and Chris Walker-Hebborn will all be bidding for semi-final places.

The day's showpiece though - and GB's best chance for a first gold - should come in the pool at the last as Adam Peaty , who smashed the world record in yesterday's heat, goes for glory in the 100m breaststroke final at around 3am.

Outside of Team GB Serena Williams starts her campaign on the court after sister Venus crashed out on day one. She plays Daria Gavrilova of Australia second on centre.

In the pool 2012 crowd favourites Chad Le Clos, Katie Ledecky and Ruta Meilutyte are back in the water hoping for more Olympic success four years on.

Elsewhere Neymar and Co. will want to get their campaign up and running after their stuttering start last week - they play Iraq in Brasilia.
