Scotland’s U20s made history this week with a helping hand from two former Stewartry Rugby Club youngsters.

Alex Craig, 20, and Stafford McDowall, 19, starred as the Scots beat Wales 29-25 on Tuesday to guarantee fifth or sixth place at the U20 World Championships in Georgia – their highest ever finish.

The victory guaranteed they will better their previous best of eighth which they set last year.

Scotland’s youngsters ran in four tries on Tuesday to set up a crunch clash with Australia on Sunday morning in Tbilisi.

Getting to this stage certainly wasn’t plain sailing for John Dalziel’s promising side.

They went behind to a Welsh try but responded quickly through wing Darcy Graham after a slick move. Centre Ross McCann extended Scotland's lead to 14-5.

The buffer didn’t last for long though and as Wales refused to roll over with their second score of the tie. It was end to end stuff in the Georgian capital and Scots skipper Callum Hunter-Hill powered over to make it 19-12 at the break.

The teams exchanged penalties in the second half until Wales looked to have snatched the victory with a try 10 minutes from time. Not against this Scotland team though and Graham was the man who stood up to be counted as he ran in try number two for the afternoon to seal a famous Scottish victory. Not only their best ever finish in the tournament but also their first win over the Welsh in the tournament’s history.

Skipper Hunter-Hill told World Rugby: “Credit to Wales they were really physical. They came out like we thought they would but credit to our backs who got us out of a lot of danger today. We are buzzing.”
