St Helens beat Wakefield, Castleford staged a late rally to win in France and the Cheshire derby was as dull as an EastEnders omnibus.

In other results, Wigan hammered Leeds and Leigh nilled Salford Red Devils as the final round of Super League before the big split took place.

Sides in the top two divisions will now split into three leagues of eight for the final seven rounds of the season, before the playoffs.

Here are seven talking points from our man Nigel Wiskar.

1. Tears turn to laughter for Salford Red Devils

Salford fans wouldn’t know whether to laugh or cry after a conflicting weekend.

First they get thumped by struggling Leigh 25-0, their sixth defeat in seven games.

But thanks to St Helens beating Wakefield by more than 14 points on Sunday, it means the Red Devils claimed fourth place at the end of the regular season - their highest finish in 41 years.

Now there’s the small matter of next Sunday’s Challenge Cup semi-final against Wigan and which side will turn up - the one spanked by the Centurions or the one that has been a breath of fresh air for the majority of the season.

2. Castleford reveal a tactical masterstroke ahead of the Super 8s

Castleford are planning on a radical switch on their left wing as they aim for the league leaders’ shield and ultimately a place in the Grand Final.

When they face their next opponents, revealed on Wednesday, the Tigers will be fielding a Dalek, followed by debuts in the next two games for MP Eric Pickles and Tyron Lannister from Game of Thrones.

As long as Michael Shenton, a purist’s joy to watch as an calculating, attacking centre, keeps feeding the passes their left winger will score.

With Greg Eden out of action, Jy Hicthcox stepped in and helped himself to a double against Catalans Dragons - though in fairness both were spectacularly taken, something you can’t imagine lardy Pickles managing once he’d torn himself away from eating the entire burger van.

3. Jy Hitchcox salutes the travelling Tigers fans

Hitchcox took to social media to praise the travelling Tigers fans after victory helped them to a 10-point lead at the head of the table.

Sky’s cameras focused on one gent with questionable dental issues wearing a wide-brimmed Aussie hat with corks around the rim. George Clooney’s missus won’t be tempted.

And Hitchcox said: “I saw a grown man in the crowd beating his chest with tears running down his face. That’s what it’s all about, gutsy effort boys.”

Cas were down to 11 men at one point and were trailing before two late tries saw them home.

4. Brian McDermott looks to the skies after defeat to Wigan

The truth is out there. Brian McDermott was quick to dismiss the conspiracy theories after his Leeds Rhinos side were beaten 34-0 by Wigan with 15 players missing.

Leeds have a Challenge Cup semi-final clash with Hull FC on Saturday and keyboard warriors are suggesting he was keeping his troops ready for that game.

But McDermott said: “Everyone thinks it’s a master plan and that they’re in Area 51 in the Nevada desert with the aliens, that it’s a ruse.

“But we play a collision sport and every one of the players that didn’t play tonight are either ruled out with concussion or have something that they’ve been carrying for a while.”

5. School of hard knocks for one Leeds Rhinos forward

Jamie-Jones Buchanan is nicknamed the hoover by teammates at Leeds - he cleans everything up.

And the veteran forward, filling in at hooker for his injury-ravaged team, showed his worth to the team again at Wigan after getting trampled by Tony Clubb and carrying on.

Coach Brian McDermott said: “That was brilliant that wasn’t it? That’s his reaction to a collision, how it should be done. Not lay down, get taken off and get a head test and get ruled out - get up and carry on.

“I’m all for the concussion rule, and it’s not to be sniffed at. But he just got himself rattled and carried on. The doc nearly went on and he waved him off, and he was involved in a try-saving tackle a couple of plays later. Jonesy has been doing that since he’s 18.”

6. Warrington and Widnes serve up a shocker

The Cheshire derby sounds like a Wilmslow polo event attended by posh folk with big teeth, bad clothes, loud voices - and no class.

Sadly that would probably be more entertaining than the tosh served up by Warrington and Widnes on Thursday night.

Wolves coach Tony Smith said his side were “a bit rusty” and counterpart Denis Betts said the Vikings were “patchy”.

Both of which sound like a pre-season excuses, hardly inspiring as the two misfiring teams prepare to enter the Middle 8s.

7. Chariots Offiah defines what it takes to be a legend

Martin Offiah is as quick off the blocks to sing his own praises as he was scorching down the flanks at Naughton Park and Central Park.

In the latest Radio 5 Live RL podcast, Offiah defines what it takes to be a legend as a winger as someone who scores 10 tries in a game.

Er that would be you Martin, a rather immodest reference of course to his own record 10-try haul in the Premiership semi-final against Leeds in 1992.

His feat is worth catching again on YouTube though to remind yourself a) what a remarkable support player he was away from the luxury of playing outside Gene Miles down that left flank and b) how malteser-squeezing tight his shorts were.
