Results: Rugby Action At National Sports Center

October 17, 2017

The weekend’s rugby action at the National Sports Center was a “showcase of the Bermuda Rugby Football Union’s commitment to growth and development of the sport,” with two variations on display.

A spokesperson said, “Women’s rugby has a strong base in the touch format, but ultimately the development of robust contact league is the goal, with the intention to build on the recent Youth Commonwealth participation and expanding the women’s Sevens program competing in the upcoming Rugby Americas North championship in Mexico this November.

“As such, four teams – Loquats, Gombeys, Long Tails and the Dark & Stormies – played a round robin tournament of Modified Contact Rugby. Scrums, line-outs, and rucks featured with the intent of developing skills, knowledge and abilities that will assist in the transition from touch to full contact.

“Dark&Stormies 7 beat Loquats 0. A try from the powerful running Deneka Borden ensured the day started off in a good note. Longtails 0 Gombeys 0, Loquats 15 Gombeys 5, arguably the best game of the day saw four tries scored.

“Loquats showed some sweet skill with Amanda Sawn opening with a long sprint to the line. Melissa Field showed her class and speed with two strong scores. Whilst new comer Apryl Jackson answered back with a fine individual weaving run in a very entertaining game.

Dark&Stormies 15 beat LongTails 0. The final game saw some real improvement on the set piece play by both teams. Deneka Borden showed her experience with two beautiful taken tries and Saphia Tonkin round the day off with a determined sprint to the corner. Next weekend will see a repeat of the format.

“In the men’s half of the schedule the inaugural 10s tournament took place. A hybrid between 7s and 15s – 10s rugby is a unique blend in which finding balance of pace and power is key. The game is fast paced and enjoyable to watch.

“Mariners beat Renegades 14-12, with Renegades getting tries from Robin Brickell and Tom Healy and a conversion from Tom Healy, and Mariners getting tries from Rory Dublin and Dustin Archibald, with conversions from Rory Dublin.

“Police beat Teachers 5-0 with a try from Patrick Graham, while Mariners beat Teachers 20-0, with tries from Chakote Wainwright [x2] Avery Williams and Johnny Hodgkins.

“Renegades beat Police 22-12, with Police getting tries from Johann Oosthuizen and Adam Rossides and a conversion from Dan Cole, while Renegade got tries from Robin Brickell [x2] Alex Brown and Tommy Westhead, and one conversion by Robin Brickell.

“Renegades beat Teachers 10-0 on tries from Tom Healy [x2], while Mariners beat Police 19-10, with Police getting tries from Henry Johnson and Patrick Graham, and Mariners getting tries from Johnny Hodgkins, Chakote Wainwright and Avery Williams, with two conversions by Johnny Hodgkins.

“The tournament, being played over two weekends, is using a bonus point [BP] system where scoring four tires or more is a BP or losing by less the seven is a BP. Wins are 4 points, draws 2 points, 0 for losing.

“The table looks like: Mariners: 3W 1BP= 13 pts, Renegades: 2W 2BP= 10 pts, Police: 1W= 4pts, Teachers: 1BP= 1 pt.

“Next Saturday at National Sports Centre starting at noon sees the conclusion of both formats.”
