Seys to final qualifier

ACTON, Ont. – Brendan Seys of Port Lambton is going to the RBC Canadian Open's final qualifier after tying for 11th place at the Ontario regional qualifier Thursday.

Seys shot a 1-under 71 at the regional qualifier at Blue Springs Golf Club. He finished five strokes behind winner Nyasha Mauchaza of Port Saint Lucie, Fla.

Mauchaza, who hails from Zimbabwe, was the only player to qualify for the RBC Canadian Open on July 23-29 in Oakville.

The final qualifier will be July 23 at Heron Point Golf Links in Ancaster.

Seys plays out of Maple City Country Club. The Ursuline graduate recently finished his sophomore season at Wayne State University.

 

Lancers go unbeaten

The Ursuline Lancers completed an unbeaten regular season in LKSSAA senior girls rugby Thursday with a 32-0 win over the Great Lakes Wolfpack in Sarnia.

Selena Bushey scored two tries for the Lancers (6-0). Natasha Smids added one try and one convert.

Savannah Emmott, Pyper Copeland and Lexeia Forgie also scored one try apiece. Brooke Heyink was the Lancers' maid of the match.

Northern beat Chatham-Kent 27-0 and St. Patrick's defeated Blenheim 28-17 in other senior games.

In the junior league, maid of the match Jenessa Blomme scored two tries in Ursuline's 39-7 win over Great Lakes.

Bailey Thibert added one try and two converts. Hunter Twigg, Jayna Dantas and Tess Cryderman each scored one try apiece.

 

Chatham FC wins opener

Reece Cowan and Kaylee Boulley each scored twice for Chatham FC in a 7-2 win over Strathroy United in Wednesday's season opener at Thames Campus in the London & Area Women's Soccer League.

Alissa Burd, Brooke MacKinnon and Julia Moretto also scored.

Chatham FC has been promoted to the Second Division after winning the Third Division West last season.

Chatham will visit the London United Thunder on Thursday, May 24, in a Division 2 Cup preliminary-round game.

 

Dukes reach semifinals

CHILLIWACK, B.C. – The Wellington Dukes, who have four ex-Chatham Maroons, have reached the semifinals at the RBC Cup.

The Dukes placed fourth in the five-team round-robin with a 1-2-1 record after losing 7-1 to the first-place Wenatchee Wild (4-0-0) on Thursday.

They'll play the Wild again in a semifinal Saturday.

The gold-medal game is Sunday.

The RBC Cup is the Canadian junior 'A' hockey championship.

The Dukes' roster includes ex-Maroons Teddy McGeen, Bryce Yetman, Josh Supryka and Andrew Barbeau.

 

Attack, Storm triumph

The Chatham Attack will host London English at 7 p.m. Friday at Thames Campus in the Western Ontario Soccer League's First Division.

The Attack have a 1-1-0 record after beating the Exeter Centennials 2-0 on May 10. Jake Fancy and Chad Hartford scored.

Also in the First Division, the Wallaceburg Sting (0-1-1) will visit the Woodstock Stallions on Friday.

In the Second Division, the Chatham Storm will visit London Scottish on Saturday.

Taylor Broad scored in the Storm's 1-0 win over Tillsonburg in the season opener May 10.

 

Two aces at Maple City

Two golfers hit holes-in-one Wednesday at Maple City Country Club.

Chuck Dubeau aced the 150-yard third hole with a nine-iron. The witnesses were Ron Sterling and Steve Smith.

Dave Taylor aced the 162-yard seventh hole with a six-iron. The witnesses were Jim Hogan and Steve Hook.
