Andy Farrell's Ireland side will be hoping to kick off a huge year with a win against Wales as they begin the 2023 Six Nations on Saturday in Cardiff.

They face a Wales side who have returned to a tried and tested formula, with Warren Gatland returning as head coach following a disappointing 2023 in which they lost to Georgia and Italy at home. Gatland is back after three years coaching in New Zealand following his exit after the 2019 World Cup.

Back then, Wales were one of the top ranked sides in the world but slipped to ninth last year as Ireland rose to number one with a series win against the All Blacks before beating them once again in November in addition to beating world champions South Africa.

However, with a fervent atmopshere in Cardiff, anything can happen with plenty of unknowns in the build-up to the game with regard to how Wales will respond with Gatland back at the helm and some new faces such as Joe Hawkins at inside-centre.
