The horses will take to the track in Maroua in the Far North region on May 11 after four years without competition.

On May 11 2024, Maroua, the regional headquarter of the Far North Region of Cameroon, will be the scene of a major horse race. The event is known as the Cameroon International Grand Prix. The announcement was made on Monday 29th April 2024 at a press conference by the board of directors of the Cameroonian Equestrian Federation under the chairmanship of the Honourable Kamsouloum Abba Kabbir.

This year’s resumption of the competition promises many innovations, according to Amidou Djaoro, National Technical Director of the federation. “We are going to see some great horse races on May 11. Both Cameroonian and foreign horses from Chad and Nigeria have been selected on the basis of their performance,’ he says. The horses will compete over distances of 1200, 1400, 1600 and 1800 metres, mainly from the northern regions of Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria, pending confirmation from Niger.”

The Lamido Yaya Daïrou stadium in the town of Maroua will be transformed into a racecourse for the duration. According to Alioum Alpha, a member of the organising committee, “On D-Day, spectators will only have to pay a small fee to enjoy the beauty of the show.”

It should be noted that this competition has been on hiatus since 2019 because of Covid 19.
