England and Exeter Chiefs star Ethan Roots returned to North Devon to lend his support to a local childcare charity, delivering a hands-on coaching session for young rugby players at Barnstaple Rugby Club. The England international then faced a different kind of challenge, answering questions from fans at Nellie’s Coffee Bar in a bid to raise awareness for Blue Elephant Future Steps CiC.
Roots, who plays for Exeter Chiefs, has been a keen advocate for the charity, which provides support for children in care and those transitioning to adulthood. His latest visit saw a strong turnout from Exeter Chiefs supporters and charity backers, all eager to celebrate the organisation’s work and highlight the difficulties faced by young people leaving the care system.
Lucy Squire, director of care at Blue Elephant, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have Ethan back with us for his second visit. His continued support means the world to us, and we cannot thank him enough for his generosity and commitment to the work we do. Ethan has shown such a genuine interest in the challenges faced by young people in care, and his involvement helps raise vital awareness about the work Blue Elephant does to prevent young people from ‘falling off the care cliff’ when they leave care at 18. We’re incredibly grateful for his time, and the success of this visit shows just how much of an impact his support has had. We hope to welcome Ethan again soon.”

This was Roots’ second appearance for Blue Elephant, having previously tried his hand at making coffee as a guest barista at Nellie’s Coffee Bar. His ongoing support has had a significant impact on the charity and the local community.
Abi Milton, operations director at Blue Elephant Future Steps, explained: “Blue Elephant Future Steps CiC is the charity set up by the directors of Blue Elephant Childcare Ltd to work specifically with care-experienced children becoming adults and leaving the care system.
“We have long recognised that leaving residential care can be like standing at the top of a cliff edge, the transition from 24-hour support, sleeping in a house with an adult there if you need them, to living in a flat or bedsit with little or no support around you. Blue Elephant CiC is focused on supporting children in care and helping them transition smoothly into independent adulthood. We are passionate about providing vital emotional support and practical services to prevent young people from falling into isolation and vulnerability when they leave care.”
