Doha: Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) has teamed up with the World Dodgeball Association to introduce Qatar's first-ever Dodgeball competitions, due to take place during next week's seventh National Sport Day celebration.

The event will take place on Aspire Zone's Outdoor Pitch 10 from 9 am until 3 pm.

"Ever since the National Sport Day was announced seven years ago, AZF has been keen to make each year more memorable than the previous one, by introducing new and unique sporting activities for all community members. In previous years, we've also launched Qatar's first-ever Japanese Kendo demonstrations and Nordic Walking exercises as well as Rugby tournaments, which encouraged the establishment of the Qatar Rugby Federation," Nasser Abdullah Al-Hajri, Chairman of the NSD Organising Committee at AZF, said.

In dodgeball players on two teams try to throw balls at each other while avoiding being hit themselves. There are many variations of the game, but generally the main objective of each team is to eliminate all members of the opposing team by hitting them with balls, catching a ball thrown by a member of the opposing team, or forcing them to move outside the court boundaries when a ball is thrown at them. There are different kinds of balls used for the game; the most common ones are foam, rubber and cloth.

The official launch of the event will be attended by representatives from the World Dodgeball Association (WDA), which is expected to announce the official launch of the Qatar Dodgeball Federation, along with representatives from Qatar's Ministry of Culture and Sports.

There will be dodgeball demonstrations, unveiling of Qatar Dodgeball Federation banner and fastest arm in Qatar competition.

The establishment of the Qatar Dodgeball Federation will encourage the growth of dodgeball's popularity across the country among communities, clubs, schools, colleges and universities and help bring international dodgeball events to Doha.

It will also contribute to the creation of a new National Dodgeball Competition Framework, including national championships, and national teams for men and women, which will take part at the 2018 Dodgeball World Cup in New York City.
