Drinks are on Howard Webb thanks to Wikipedia... while there is shirt hurt for Manchester City's Scott Carson

  • Former referee Howard Webb was almost denied entry to a US bar this week
  • You still can't buy a Manchester City kit with Scott Carson's name on it
  • Jofra Archer was spotted sipping on pina coladas in Manchester this summer

Howard Webb is used to enforcing the law but even the former referee appeared to be caught out when confronted with the rules on gaining access to a bar without ID in the US.

America has a policy under which even a bald 48-year-old can be denied entry if he can't prove he's over 21.

Webb, who is heading up the MLS refereeing operation, was out with a group of journalists and was all set to call it a night.

Then one of the group had the bright idea of bringing up his Wikipedia page, showing the doorman his picture and informing him that Webb had refereed the 2010 World Cup final.

It worked, with the slightly embarrassed bouncer at least able to see the funny side.

Shirt hurt for City's Carson

It would appear that new kit manufacturers Puma have not yet got the message that Manchester City have signed goalkeeper Scott Carson, 33.

Carson, who has four England caps, joined earlier this month but fans do not have the option to add his name to the back of shirts on the club website.

Some might even have the temerity to suggest that Carson is there mainly for the homegrown quota.

City say the website's goalkeeper printing section is being updated and that his name will soon be added.

Wales pull plug on Sky

No-nonsense Football Association of Wales bosses cracked down on Sky Sports after they breached the embargo on Ryan Giggs's latest squad.

A list of the 26 players to face Azerbaijan and Belarus next month was given out last Tuesday with instructions that it not be made public before 6.30am the following day. But a mix-up at Sky's London HQ saw the squad revealed late on Tuesday.

And when Sky's reporter turned up at Llangrannog, west Wales, he was told by the FAW's media chief that the one-on-one interview he had planned would no longer be happening.

It forced Sky to run footage of Giggs answering a question from a schoolgirl instead.

A sign of match-fixing?

Visitors to Istanbul's Conrad Hotel before the Super Cup final earlier this month were taken aback by one of the signs put up by UEFA's staff. A group from the governing body used the trip to hold a number of meetings with stakeholders.

The sign read simply: 'Working Group on Match-Fixing', prompting sniggers among some of those staying at the venue, who joked that it merely confirmed what many had speculated about for years.

Jofra's favourite tipple

His fast bowling may be terrorising Australia's batsmen, but they might well be less intimidated if they knew Jofra Archer's tipple of choice.

The 24-year-old was spotted sipping on a couple of pina coladas at Manchester's Lowry Hotel during the World Cup, which he would help to win with his super over heroics.

Crystal Palace's hotel nightmare

Crystal Palace fans have been angered by a reluctance to spend in the transfer market and it would appear that such thrifty behaviour has caught on in the travel department.

Palace's players were heard moaning about their hotel accommodation during their pre-season trip to Switzerland.

Sources have told Sports Agenda that the venue in question was three-star and claimed it had no air conditioning.

At least nobody can accuse the Eagles of not being grounded.

Keyboard warriors at it again

Rugby League's Challenge Cup final is known for its family atmosphere, so it was refreshing on Saturday morning to see Super League referee and the afternoon's video official Ben Thaler enjoying a coffee outside Wembley, engaged in conversation with passers-by.

Sadly, it was a long way from abuse later dished out on Twitter to Rob Hicks, who refereed the game.

Hicks's decision not to award St Helens an early try — or even send it to Thaler upstairs — had the keyboard warriors at it again in a week which has seen the social media network under fire after Manchester United pair Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba were racially abused.
